Fort Branch, In.- Gibson Southern Varsity baseball fell in the season opener against Evansville Reitz Monday night at Gibson Southern, 7-4.
Logan Maurer gets the start on the mound for the Titans tonight. Maurer started the first inning by getting three straight outs on a fly out from Brown, a ground out by Cape and getting the final out with a fly out by Schippert. Left hander Cape gets the start on the mound for the Reitz Panthers. In the bottom of the first, the Titans leave two runners stranded on base after Oliver Hamilton and Colton Okes drew walks.
In the top of the second Maurer, still on the mound, struck out the first two batters he faced in the inning. The final out in the top of the second inning: Maurer gets a ground out to end his second scoreless inning. In the bottom of the second, the Titans get two runners on base with two outs after Landon Stoll reaches on an error by the Reitz shortstop and a single by Drew Foster but cannot score the runners.
Reitz gets on the board in the top of the third inning starting with a walk to Gibson. Gibson moves up to second base with a stolen base. A sacrifice bunt by Bell moves Gibson to third base, and he scores on an error by second baseman Drew Foster off the bat of Folz. Folz reaches second base on Foster’s error. After the error, Maurer gets Pierce to strikeout looking for the second out of the inning. Folz scores after a double off the bat of Cape. Schippert flies out ot centerfielder Brayden Malone for the final out of the inning.
Gibson Southern was held scoreless in the first two innings before they scored four runs in the bottom of the third. It all started with a walk to Kaden Hurless, who beat the throw in a fielder’s choice off the bat of Colton Okes. With runners at first and second Jon Beauchamp walks, loading the bases for Adyn Schmidt. Schmidt gets a single to left allowing Hurless to score. After the single by Schmidt, Reitz changes pitchers and goes with the right hander Staley. Logan Maurer drove in two runs with a double to left field. Landon Stoll comes up to bat with runners at second and third and grounds out to the pitcher scoring Schmidt from third to end the inning.
It’s back out to the mound for Maurer in the top of the fourth getting three straight outs. In the bottom of the fourth the Titans are held scoreless with one runner left on base.
In the top of the fifth inning, Maurer walks the leadoff batter Staley. Staley is moved to second by a sacrifice bunt by Bell. The next batter Folz singles a ground ball to the right fielder Jon Beauchamp scoring Smith from second base. After the single by Folz Noah Bryant came in to pitch for the Titans. Folz moves up to second after an attempted pick off error by Bryant. After the throwing error Bryant, he gets Pierce to strikeout. Next batter Bryant faces walks, leading to a single by Schippert scoring Folz. Ending the scoring for the Panthers Bryant gets A. Damm to ground out to the catcher to end the inning. In the bottom of the fifth the Titans go down in order with three strikeouts.
In the top of the sixth Reitz gets a leadoff walk by Bryant and Coach May goes to his bullpen bringing in Senior Landon Stoll. Stoll gets Herrenbruck out on a sacrifice bunt advancing runner York to second base. York advances to third on a wild pitch by Stoll and Staley walks to put runners at first and third. Stoll gets Bell to strikeout, but not before Smith moves up to second base on a defensive indifference. Folz puts the ball in play and Reitz scores on an error by the third baseman Logan Maurer. To end the inning Stoll gets Pierce to ground into a fielder’s choice. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth Brayden Malone doubles down the left field line and advances to third on a throwing error by the left fielder. However, Malone gets stranded at third to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Stoll gets the first batter of the inning to ground out to third. Schippert doubles to left bringing Stoll’s inning to an end. Oliver Hamilton takes over on the mound and gets the batter to line out to center. Hamilton walks the next batter and Herrenbruck reaches on an error by the shortstop scoring another Panther run. Reitz gets another run on a passed ball by catcher Adyn Schmidt. Hamilton ends the inning with a strikeout of Staley. Titans cannot get anything started after a one out walk by Okes.
The winning pitcher for Evansville Reitz was Staley with Pierce getting the save. Noah Bryant gets the loss for Gibson Southern.
The Titans are back in action Friday night in the McDonald’s Double Play Tournament. The Titans will play Heritage Christian on Friday night at 6:30 CST at Vincennes University.
